Deri: Opposition to Rabbi Stav is not Personal


Shas Chairman Arye Deri told Israel Army Radio that Rabbi Ovadia has no personal issue with Rabbi David Stav's candidacy, and was only opposed to his election as Chief Rabbi because he disputes various Halakhic rulings of Rabbi Stav, who is known for his creative ability to resolve complicated Torah Law issues in a non-mainstream way, despite all rulings conforming to strictly Orthodox Halakha. Rav Ovadia, says Deri, seeks a Chief  Rabbi who firmly adheres to mainstream Halakha, without contemporary interpretations subject to speculation.
