Knesset Rejects Bill to End Army Draft

The Knesset rejected a proposed bill to end the draft in a preliminary reading on Wednesday. The amendment to the Defense Service Law would eliminate mandatory army duty. The bill was submitted by Member of Knesset Yisrael Eichler (United Torah Judaism Party). The bill was intended to end compulsory army service and allow recruitment on a voluntary basis, depending on the needs of the Israel Defense Force. Other Members of Knesset are seeking to expand the draft.
