The Ministry of Agriculture declared, Monday, that the phenomenon of locusts on Israel's border with Egypt was eradicated without damage to farms or farmers at a cost of 7.5 million shekels. Agriculture Minister Yair Shamir cited cooperative around-the-clock efforts by the staff of the ministry, local councils and the farmers over the last three months. He also said that updates and other improvements to the ministry's crisis management mechanism have resulted in an elaborate system that will provide to any kind of plant or animal crisis.
The ministry staff said harmless individual locusts are still being seen but are being treated as individuals, and new swarms have not been seen on either side of the border, but the ministry will be ready if new swarms come. Some staff is remaining in the field to deal with the possibility in the immediate future.
