There is an initiative on the social networks to say Kaddish and study Mishna so that the soul of author Yoram Kaniuk, who passed away Saturday evening, will rise to Heaven, even though he was married to a non-Jew and fought to change his affiliation to "without religion." It was reported, following his death, that there would be no funeral because he asked that his body be donated to science.
A hasidic yeshiva student who prayed on behalf of Kaniuk's soul, Sunday morning, told Arutz Sheva, "At the end of the day, a Jew remains a Jew, and as a Jew, one must act for his Jewish soul. It's sad that he did not recognize his Jewish identity, but that does not exempt us from taking care of his Jewish soul. It is said 'All Jews are involved in each other,' and that includes the departed writer."
