The Ministerial Committee on Legislation is scheduled to discuss, Sunday, a bill by Member of Knesset Dov Lipman (Yesh Atid) to prohibit the importation of liver from animals that have undergone abuse. Twenty Knesset members from across the political spectrum have co-sponsored the legislation, which is most associated with the forced feeding of geese.
The proposal is based on a law that went into effect in California last summer. Information supporting the California statute cited the Israeli Supreme Court ruling that banned forced feeding of water fowl, as enacted by the Knesset ten years ago. The Agriculture Ministry recently published concern that the practice was being renewed, following a case where a defendant was acquitted because of reasonable doubt.
