Kerry Calls Abbas Twice in 24 hours

Israel Today reports U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday night for the second time in 24 hours, as he continued his efforts to jump-start the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process, said PA Arab WAFA news agency.

Abbas told Kerry that Israel must halt settlement construction and release PA Arab prisoners before peace negotiations can be renewed, explains Israel Today.

Over the weekend, PA Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki said a breakthrough likely would not be achieved by June 7, as Kerry had hoped, adds Israel Today, and that the U.S. secretary of state would ask for an extension to continue to try to bring the two sides together for talks.
