Habayit Hayehudi (Jewish Home-New National Religious Party) will have to decide, Monday, what its next steps are regarding the selection of the next chief rabbi of Israel, after an apparent deal with the Shas party for the election of Rabbis Ya'akov Ariel and Shlomo Amar did not advance next week.
Arutz Sheva has learned that a group of rabbis met with Party Chairman Naftali Bennett in an attempt to change the party's support for legislation to expand the body that will choose the chief rabbis. The rabbis oppose expansion of the panel because of the inroads of non-orthodox forms of Judaism. The same message was heard during between rabbis of the Har Hamor yeshiva with Knesset members Yoni Chetboun and Motti Yogev. Similar sentiments were heard during a meeting between Rabbi Dov Lior of Kiryat Arba'-Hevron and Deputy Religious Affairs Minister Eli Ben-Dahan, who was accompanied by Member of Knesset Zevulun Kalfa.
