Produce Growers Against Value Added Tax on Produce

Secretary Meir Yifrach of the Vegetable Growers Association asked Treasurer Yair Lapid, Sunday, to withdraw his proposal to remove the exemption on value-added Tax (VAT) for fruits and vegetables. Yifrach pointed out previous steps against produce growers, which included charging them employers taxes, raising water prices and imposing special fees.

Noting the nutritional importance of produce, Yifrach said the impact on the state coffers was limited but said its impact on agriculture and weak sectors of society could be devastating. He warned of unemployment and contraction in the agricultural sector, less green space and youth leaving agriculture, peripheral areas and the country. Yifrach said the producers were already considering on their next steps, which include striking the markets, production cutbacks and demonstrations.
