Meretz Against Limiting of Small Parties

Member of Knesset Zahava Gal-On (Meretz Party) came out against the proposal of MK David Rotem (Yisrael Beiteinu) to limit small parties. MK Rotem drafted a bill that would raise the electoral threshold from 2% to 4%. MK Gal-On said the result would be too much power in the hands of the large parties. Meretz currently has 6 Members of Knesset. There are currently 12 parties in the Knesset. The largest is the Likud - Yisrael Beiteinu faction who merged for the elections with 31 seats. The two smallest parties are the Balad party with 3 seats and the Kadima party with 2 seats. If MK Rotem's bill were to pass, each party would need at least 4 seats to make it into eth Knesset.
