Sari Raz, a former journalist for Channel 1 News who served on the committee that chose the poets whose faces will appear on the new Bank of Israel bills, claimed on Sunday night that "I really do not know any prominent Mizrachi poets from the 20th century." Raz made the comments in an interview on Channel 10, after many people criticized the committee for choosing four poets for the new bills, all of Ashkenazi descent and none of Spanish Jewish (Sephardi) and Middle Eastern Jewish (Mizrachi) descent.
"If someone had stood out, he would probably have made the list. I just do not know any. I really do not know prominent Mizrachi poets from the 20th century who are taught in schools. If you know anyone - give me a suggestion,” said Raz and added, “Everyone who was interviewed on the radio today said Yehuda Halevi. They did not mention other names. I'm waiting for more names.”
