Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is considering appointing Ron Dermer, his political advisor for the last four years, to be Israel's next ambassador to Canada, according to a Tuesday-morning report by the Yisrael Hayom daily. Miriam Ziv's term will end this summer.
Another name mentioned for the post is Director-General Rafi Barak of the Foreign Ministry. The appointment is expected to be made with the agreement of Yisrael Beyteinu chairman Avigdor Lieberman, who resigned as foreign minister pending the outcome of his trial on charges of improprieties in the appointment of an ambassador to Belarus. Netanyahu is Acting Foreign Minister pending the ruling, expected after the trial's scheduled end in mid July.
