Syrian Rebels Take Base near Israeli Border

The battalion of Syrian rebels responsible for the recent abduction of United Nations observers near the Israeli border took control of a Syrian army intelligence base eight kilometers/five miles from the Golan Heights border on Sunday. The battle over the base lasted seven days.

In a video clip posted by the battalion, the biggest building on the base looks deserted. Rebel fighters are seen stepping on a big picture of Basil Al-Assad, the older brother of the Syrian president, who was considered to succeed their father, Hafez Al-Assad but died in an auto accident.
