Jewish participants in the well-known SXSW music festival observed the Shabbat this past weekend. The #openShabbat event featured a traditional Friday night meal, Saturday services and lunch. The event was open to the public but all participants were required to refrain from using any electronic devices such as phones and computers, as is traditional. According to TheVerge.com, over 100 people showed up, an increase from 40 the previous year. The South By Southwest festival, better known as SXSW is one of the biggest music and arts conferences in the United States and features seminars, performances and networking opportunities for film and music professionals and artists. It is currently being held in Austin, Texas through March 17th.
