Report: Compromise to Keep Rivlin as Speaker for a Year

Senior members of the Likud party are offering compromise wording that will allow Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin "to finish his role with dignity," according to a Tuesday-morning report by the Yisrael Hayom daily.

Under the proposal, Rivlin will be appointed as soon as a new government is formed and will announce his committment to retire within the year, about three months before the elections for the office of president, for which he intends to campaign. At that time, Yuli-Yoel Edelstein will be appointed to succeed him. It was not readily known if the proposal was acceptable to Edelstein or Prime Minister and Likud Chairman Binyamin Netanyahu.
