UN Increases Sanctions on North Korea

The Security Council of the United Nations voted 15-0, Thursday, to approve a draft of a resolution to increase sanctions on North Korea, following the Communist country's recent nuclear-weapons test. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the resolution sends an uncompromising message that the international community will not tolerate a nuclear arms race.

Referring to North Korean threats of nuclear war, United States Ambassador Susan Rice said, "North Korea will achieve nothing by continued threats and provocation."
