Israel Goes on Locust Alert

The Plant Protection and Inspection Service of the Ministry of Agriculture has gone on "locust alert", in light of the swarms that have been sighted in Egypt. Miriam Freund, who manages the service, said, Monday, "Israel has air and ground-based pesticide systems which are ready for activiation if and when we need it." She said suppliers have been contacted to make sure there is enough pesticide and the service is in constant contact with the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization, which officially notified Israel of the Egyptian situation as part of its monitoring efforts from northern Africa to India.

The ministry asks the public if it sees a swarm of thousands of locusts to call its "locust line": 03 968 1500, between 7:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
