(IsraelNN.com) Rep. Benjamin Gilman (R – NY) is retiring after 30 years in office rather than face fellow New York Republican Rep. Sue Kelly in a newly drawn district. Gilman, 79, has represented the district just north of New York City since 1972.
Gilman served many years as Chairman of the powerful Committee on Foreign Affairs of the US House of Representatives. Gilman is himself Jewish and a well-known, strong supporter of Israel. Gilman, a moderate, was an assistant state attorney general and a member of the state Assembly before winning the House seat.
