Plans for the withdrawal of French forces in Mali estimate that the French will hand over the entire military operation to the Malian army by March.
“We are today at a maximum size. We are at 4,000 and we will not go above that,” Jean-Yves Le Drian, French defense minister, told Europe 1 on Wednesday.
Le Drian said the Malian army has also reached 4,000 soldiers.
“That means that the progressive handover of the French presence to the African military presence can be done relatively quickly and after several weeks we can begin to reduce our size,” he said.
