Abbas Hopes to Renew Talks after Elections

Chairwoman Zahava Gal-on of the Meretz Party told Chairman Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Thursday, "There's no partner for peace in Israel." Interviewed by the PA's WAFA news agency, she said the responsiblity has been placed on the opposition and social-justice organizations to press the next government to renew talks with the PA. Gal-On and Abu Mazen agreed that any peace agreement be based on Israel returning to its June 4, 1967 borders and the PA establishing its capital in Jerusalem. She presented Meretz's platform, which also includes cancellation of the Oslo Accords and exchange of territories on a one-for-one basis.

Gal-On said she heard "very significant things from Abbas about getting out of the freeze in talks." She said he expressed deep concern about the deadlock in talks but noted that after the Knesset elections in January he intends to start dialog with the resulting government
