Attorney Itamar Ben-Gvir announced, Monday, that the Jerusalem Small-Claims Court has ordered police to pay him 7,000 shekels because of illegal arrest and detention. Under the December 16th decision, the police must also pay fellow Otzma Leyisrael activist Bentzi Gopstein 2,000 shekels.
The claim grew out of their detention following their participation in a demonstration protesting the release of security prisoners for abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit. A court official said a film of the incident showed that while the two argued against police instructions to disperse, they did so in a civilized manner and moved to the side of the road, not engaging in violence, blocking traffic or endangering the safety of anyone. She further explained that police were not driven by the heat of the moment in detaining the two.
