Bikur Holim to Become Part of Sha'arei Tzedek

A merger agreement is scheduled to be signed, Sunday evening, under which financially-troubled Bikur Holim Hospital in downtown Jerusalem will become a wing of the capital's Sha'arei Tzedek Medical Center, bringing to a close the 145-year history of the facility as an independent entity.

Chairman Leonid Idelman of the Israel Medical Association said it was a difficult day to watch the closing of a hospital but added there was hope for the future because the association did the best it could for the doctors and the patients. He explained that in the course of negotiations, the association solved the problem of insurance exposure, adding that the association would find jobs in other hospitals for specialists who are not absorbed by Sha'arei Tzedek.
