Ashton Criticizes New Housing Tenders in Jerusalem

Foreign-policy chief Catherine Ashton of the European Union criticized Israel, Thursday, for publishing competitive bids, this week, for the construction of 1,213 new homes in the northern-Jerusalem neighbourhoods Pisgat Ze'ev and Ramot, according to Agence France Presse.

Lady Ashton said, in a statement, that she "deeply regrets" the move, adding, "Settlements are illegal under international law and threaten to make a two-state solution impossible." She added, "Continuous expansion of settlements, wherever this takes place, further complicates ongoing diplomatic efforts to avoid a deterioration in the prospects for a return to negotiations at this critical time."
