Abbas Ready for More Talks After UN Status is Raised

Chairman Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority (PA) told European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, Thursday, that his side was "ready to return to the negotiating table after raising the status of Palestine at the UN, in order to resume talks" with Israel, according to Agence France Presse.

Citing the official Wafa news agency, AFP reported that Lady Ashton said the European Union still considered the principle of the two-state solution the basis for resolving the Israeli-Arab conflict. She wrapped up a two-day visit to Israel and the PA by meeting with PA Prime Minister Salaam Fayad and Palestine Liberation Organization member Hanan Ashrawi. During the meeting with Fayyad, she participated in the olive harvest in support of claims by PA residents that they had been attacked by Jews.
