Hamas’ victory in the 2006 Palestinian Authority elections sparked the “Arab Spring” trend toward Islamic rule, Hamas head in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh said Tuesday. Haniyeh was quoted by Maan news as saying that Hamas was “the first model which led to the breakout of a sweeping Arab revolution in the Islamic region.”

Hamas was the first Islamic organization to become a government, he said.
