Minister: Shdema to Become a Permanent Jewish Presence

Information and Diaspora Affairs Minister Yuli Edelstein said, Thursday, that the abandoned Israel Defense Forces base in Shdema, just south of Jerusalem, will become a permanent Jewish presence on the landscape of the Gush Etzion bloc of Judean Jewish communities. Speaking at an event - held at the site - to honor Ina Viniarsky for her part in the establishment of 45 Jewish communities, the Likud lawmaker pointed at the nearby Jewish community of Teko'a, which was not expected to become anything decades ago.

Edelstein said he was not just trying to score points with those in attendance, noting the success of efforts to block Palestinian Authority efforts to establish facts on the ground with the intent of making things difficult for area Jews. He concluded, "Therefore, I am sure that in the future there will be [Jewish] building and a permanent presence."
