Rivlin: Reconsider Gush Etzion Separation Barrier

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin called on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Monday, to delay and reconsider continuation of the Gush Etzion separation barrier on its current route. Speaking during a tour of the route with the local council heads from Gush Etzion, Efrat, Beitar Ilit and the southern Hevron Hills, Rivlin said the route was based on security considerations that are no longer relevant, it would open a new diplomatic front and would frustrate Jews and Arabs who have developed coexistence. He added there was nothing urgent about proceeding with the plans, especially with its estimated price tag of more than a billion shekels.

Gush Etzion Council Chairman Davidi Perl and South Hevron Hills Council Chairman Tzvika Bar-Chai echoed Rivlin's comments, focusing on the potential of the barrier to cut Jerusalem off from Hevron and to isolate Jewish communities in the area.
