Much Ado About Tel Aviv Yom Kippur (Non) Bike Rentals

The Tel Aviv municipality responded, Sunday afternoon, to a threat by Transportation and Road Safety Minister Yisrael Katz to stop funding of the city's Tel-Ofen bicycle-rental program if it operates on Yom Kippur, a popular occasion for secular riders of bikes, skateboards and other human-powered vehicles throughout the country because of the lack of motor vehicles on the road.

The city noted that the ministry does not fund the rental program. It also said the city only allows people to rent the bicycles before the start of the fast and to return them upon its completion. In a statement, the municipality said, "The city regrets the attempt of the Minister to harm the project, whose success as an alternative to public transport has already been proven."
