Tel Aviv City Council member Rabbi Shlomo Zafrani has protested the opening of the Nokia Arena on the Sabbath. The arena will be open for Sabbath performances by the Cirque de Soleil.
The arena is typically only open on the Sabbath for Hanukkah events that begin on Friday and end on Friday evening, Rabbi Zafrani said. The planned Sabbath events will mean “mass Sabbath desecration, a blatant trampling of the holiness of the Sabbath day and of residents’ sensitivities,” he said. It will also change the city’s “status quo” between religious and secular residents, he added.
