Hareidi-religious activists in Tiberias are demanding that the city not install new digital water meters without asking the permission of the homeowner, according to a Sunday report by the Ma'ariv daily. The demand follows the installation of digital meters in a number of neighborhoods with large hareidi populations.
There is concern that the digital nature of the meters can result in desecration of Shabbat and a number of people hired private contractors to have the meters removed. One activist called the installation of the meters without checking the matter out "amateurish". The activists are demanding that water meters meet a generally-recognized hareidi standard, acknowledging the existence of a number of institutes for granting kosher certification for such devices.
