Attorney Ya'akov Weinroth announced, Sunday evening, that he was resigning from the committee on equal burden of service, headed by Kadima Member of Knesset Yochanan Plesner. Weinroth represented the Shas and United Torah Judaism hareidi-religious parties.
The committee was charged with forming alternatives to the now-expired Tal Law, which provided deferments to military service for draft-age yeshiva students. Earlier in the evening, Shas Chairman Eli Yishai made it clear that Shas opposed penalizing yeshiva students for not enlisting. Last week, the Bayit Yehudi and Yisrael Beytenu parties quit over the committees refusal to impose fines in the Arab sector.
