Report: Hamas Celebrates Mursi Win

Gazans cheered and fired volleys of celebratory gunfire in the streets of the Hamas-controlled territory, Sunday, at the news that Mohammed Mursi was the official winner of the Egyptian presidential elections, according to Agence France Presse. Hamas grew from the Egyptian organization and maintains long-standing ties with it. Referring to Israel, senior Hamas official Mahmoud Az-Zahar told AFP that the victory was "a defeat for the programme of normalisation and security cooperation with the enemy.'

Palestinian Authority negotiator Saeb Erakat told AFP, "We congratulate Doctor Mohamed Mursi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, on his win in the Egyptian presidential elections, and his election as president of Egypt."
