Students Protest at Eli Yishai's Home over Housing

Students from the Hebrew University held a demonstration, Monday morning, outside the home of Interior Minister Eli Yishai, charging him with not keeping promises, made more than half a year ago, to implement recommendations of the Kehat Committee regarding student housing. At a November news conference, Yishai presented a reform program for municipal taxes that gave equal discounts to students in dormitories and students in yeshivas, as well as relief in payments intended to encourage students to work. The program also included relief in criteria for disabled people.

Chairman Itai Gottler of the Hebrew University Students' Association said, "It is time the Minister of Interior implemented his promises and bring about social justice as he purports to do, rather than soften the recommendations of the committee which he appointed himself, which were supposed to bring about a reduction of gaps and bring relief to the physically handicapped, parents and students of low socio-economic status."
