Echoing comments made by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Sunday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Monday that the Assad family was conducting its massacres of Syrian citizens with the support and help of Iran and Hizbullah. “The world looks on but is apparently powerless to marshall its forces and stop the massacres. We are following the issue very closely because of our interest in Hizbullah, and especially the possibility that advanced or unconventional weapons will be transferred to the terror group,” Barak said. “As soon as the Syrian government falls, we will be paying close attention to what happens. But in the end, it is difficult to predict exactly what will happen there,” Barak added.
Speaking Sunday, Netanyahu said that the massacres in Syria “are being carried out not only by Syria, but is being aided by Iran and Hizbullah,” Netanyahu said. “The world must see Iran, Syria, and Hizbullah as the new evil empire. The true face of this evil empire has been shown to in its full measure of ugliness. We must understand the neighborhood we are living in,” he added.
