Rabbi: If Reform Recognized, Rabbinate will Disband

The Israeli Rabbinate will need to disband and recreate itself from scratch if Israel recognizes Reform Jewish leaders as rabbis, Rabbi Yaakov Ariel told Arutz Sheva. Rabbi Ariel, the rabbi of Ramat Gan, said, “Just calling them rabbis is the problem. A rabbi is a person who knows halacha (Jewish law), who knows how to rule regarding halacha. They don’t have halacha, so the concept ‘rabbi’ doesn’t apply to them.”

Rabbi Ariel added that he is not opposed to Reform leaders getting state funding “like Muslims get a kadi and Christians get a priest… They should be funded as representatives of their community, but not as rabbis.”
