Israel's Army Radio reports this morning that religious factions in Egypt are demanding the Grand Mufti's resignation now that his secret visit to the Old City of Jerusalem has been publicized. The movements' leaders claim that the Mufti's agreement to come to Jerusalem is equivalent to engaging in normal contact with Israel.
The Mufti's supporters dismissed the charges, saying that coming to Jerusalem is not an example of normalization with Israel.
Israel signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979 that was supposed to lead to normalization, by definition.
