Ofra-Area Roadblock Comes Down to Save Arabs Money

The Highway 60 roadblock for 'en Y'brud, west of the Samarian Jewish community of Ofra, was recently removed. As a result, Palestinian Authority Arab traffic can freely travel the highway to Silwad, north of Ofra.

The checkpoint was installed ten years ago, during Operation Defensive Shield. The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) says the opening of the roadblock will cut travelling distance for the 47,000 residents of Arab villages in the area by 20 kilometers/13 miles and half an hour. An international organization performed a traffic survey the second week after the removal of the checkpoint. Given daily traffic of more than 1,400 vehicles, including 170 trucks and other commercial vehicles, COGAT said the move will save the Arabs 4.6 million shekels a year.
