C'tee OKs Bill to Give Chief Rabbis Chance at 2nd Term

The Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee approved for first reading, Monday, a bill that would allow Israel's chief rabbis to run for a second term. If approved, the measure would return things to the 1970s, when the term of the chief rabbi was ten years.

The terms of the current chief rabbis are scheduled to expire in a little more than a year, at the beginning of the Jewish month of Nissan, 5773. Chief Ashkenazic Rabbi Yonah Metzger said the proposal is not relevant for him since he does not intend to run for re-election unless instructed to do so by rabbis he looks up to.
