Attorney Avi Himi, who represents former Minister Rabbi Shlomo Benizri, welcomed on Tuesday the decision of the Israel Prison Service to shorten Benizri's prison sentence and release him in April for good behavior.
“Rabbi Benizri gave over 1,000 Torah lessons in prison, he supported the other prisoners and served his sentence the best way possible,” Himi told Arutz Sheva. He expressed his disappointment that President Shimon Peres did not respond to all the requests for clemency that were sent to him.
“We filed a request for a pardon which was signed by public officials, politicians, scientists, doctors from all sectors, and renowned professors who knew his integrity and sensitivity from his activities as Welfare Minister, but unfortunately until now the president did not respond to the requests,” Himi said. “We believe that there is a very significant flaw in the fact that the President did not answer us, we should have received a reply.”
