Weinstein: Nothing Wrong With Grunis Law

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein said Monday that the Grunis Law, which will enable Judge Asher Grunis to be appointed as President of the High Court when Dorit Beinisch retires, did not violate any basic laws, and was legal. In a petition, the Movement for Quality Government said that the law was improper, because it was designed to benefit one person, overriding convention and custom in the appointment of officers on the court.

Weinstein said in response to the petition that the law did not interfere with the independence of the judiciary or in its ability to make decisions, and that in his legal opinion it was perfectly in line with the Basic Laws.
