'Grunis Law' Appealed

The Movement for Quality Government (MQM) petitioned the Supreme Court,Tuesday morning, against the newly-passed amendment to the Court Law requiring less time served and remaining to be served by a High Court Justice to be eligible for the presidency of the court. The amendment has been called the 'Grunis Law' because it will enable Justice Asher Grunis to succeed Dorit Beinisch as the top jurist when she steps down from the bench next month.

MQM is seeking an order asking the Knesset why the amendment should not be revoked or, alternately, a clause that the amendment not apply to the selection of the next Supreme Court president. The movement is also asking that an order be issued to block the Judge Selection Committee from acting on the presidency until the court rules on the petition.
