Holocaust Survivor Welfare Authority to be Discussed

The Parliamentary Lobby for Holocaust Survivors is scheduled to discuss, Monday, a legislative proposal by Co-Chairmen Ze'ev Bielski and Zevulun Orlev that would create a national authority to coordinate the activities of the various organizations working for the welfare of Holocaust survivors. The goal of such an authority would be to make dealing with their cases more efficient and giving the survivors a single consistent place to turn to exercise their rights.

In explanatory literature accompanying the bill, the two Knesset members note that assistance to the 200,000 survivors currently living in the country is insufficient and many of them are stuck in bureaucracy. They say Israel must do all it can to enable the survivors to live in dignity, adding that their care should be on the public agenda as part of the public's moral obligation to them.
