Controls on Genetic Engineering to be Expanded?

The Knesset Science and Technology Committee will hold a hearing, Monday, on the need to expand regulations regarding genetic engineering in agriculture. While genetic engineering has proven benefits, there are those who say not enough is known about the possibility of adverse effects.

The hearing is being held in conjunction with the 90th anniversary of the Volcani Center administration for agricultural research in Rechovot, a branch of the Hebrew University. The committee will examine if the regulatory tools at the disposal of agricultural research serve research or if they should be amended, including the addition of regulations.
