Underpass for Camels Part of Southern Transpo Plan

A 900-million-shekel project to upgrade Highway 31 between the Dead Sea and the Shoket Junction, north of Be'er Sheva', was officially launched Thursday. The three-year project includes widening of the road to two lanes in each direction and improvement of safety features. The safety features include interchanges, increased lighting and shoulder space and 40 underpasses, including the state's first underpass designed for camels, which will be 2.7 meters/almost nine feet high.

During Thursday's dedication ceremonies, Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz said his ministry's priorities include extending Route 6, the trans-Israel toll road, south of the Shoket Junction to the Negev Junction.
