Report: Crown Prince Choice Splits Saudis

Saudi Prince Talal bin Abdul Aziz has quit the Allegiance Council controlling succession to the king, following the appointment of Prince Nayef to succeed King Abdullah, following the death of Crown Prince Sultan last month, according to a Thursday report by Britain's Daily Telegraph. The announcement on Prince Talal's website, which followed the prince's informing the king, was seen as a protest over the lack of debate on the expected nomination.

Prince Talal is one of the royal family's most liberal members while Prince Nayef is a hardline conservative, arguing against women's rights, among other things.
