Brigadier General Chaggai Mordechai is scheduled to replace Brigadier General Nitzan Alon, Tuesday, as commander of the Judea and Samaria Division of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Mordechai is viewed as a valued officer in the IDF. Among his previous commands are a paratroop brigade, battalion and commando unit, the elite Egoz reconaissance unit, the Hevron brigade and the Pillar of Fire Formation, an armored division.
Alon's tenure was highlighted by profiling soldiers who were residents of the region as potential aids to those who would prevent the military from uprooting Jewish residents. He recently warned the United States Congress not to suspend aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA), despite the PA's unilateral statehood bid at the United Nations, saying it would lead to instability.
