Mayor: Major Damage from Earthquake

The mayor of a city in the province of Van in eastern Turkey, which has borne the brunt of Sunday's major earthquake, has appealed for assistance in saving many of the city's citizens, who have been buried in rubble. The mayor made his appeal in an interview with Turkish media, saying that there were many collapsed buildings in the city.

The earthquake, which struck around noon on Sunday, measured 7.2 on the Richter scale.
