US Envoy: Syrian Army Still Too Strong for Overthrow

The U.S. ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, said Saturday that the uprising in Syria reminded him of the situation in Iraq 7 years ago, on the eve of the mass civil war there. Ford said that one way to prevent bloodshed would be for Syria's opposition to present a “clearer vision” of what it sees for the country's future, in order to give the common people a framework to work towards.

He added that the U.S. believed that a militarization of the opposition movement would be a moral and tactical mistake, because Syria's security forces "are still very strong, and there is not an armed opposition that is capable of overthrowing the Syrian government.”
