Thousands of Forces on Alert


About 22,000 police officers deployed to various places, Thursday evening, to thwart the possiblity of Arab sources exploiting a scheduled speech by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas at the United Nations to push Arab masses in Judea and Samaria, as well as areas within the 1949 armistice line into violent demonstrations.

The Israel Defense Forces increased troop levels around Jerusalem, including the Kalandia crossing at the northern end of the capital and Rachel's Tomb, between the southern end of the city and Bethlehem. Other potetial hotspots are the Ramallah area, north of Jerusalem, Hevron to the south, and the traditional Friday confrontation points of Na'alin and Bi'lin, about halfway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Access for men to Temple Mount mosques will be limited to those over 50 years of age with blue identification cards, while there will be no limit for women.
