Deputy Chief Shmuel Zakai of the Israel Airports and Crossings Authority said, Thursday, that the authority will invest 100 million shekels in improvements to the Allenby Bridge crossing between Israel and Jordan, just east of the Dead Sea-area city of Jericho. Zakai informed General Eitan Dangot, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, of the investment during a tour of the site, accompanied by senior officers under Dangot's command and Brigadier General Motti Almog, Director of the Civil Administration for Judea and Samaria.
Zakai said the improvements include the opening of a new traveller's lounge just for tourists to lower the load on the current facility. Also on the list are new access roads and parking lots, giant open-sided shelters and improvements to lighting and air conditioning. Improvement are also being made for commercial freight traffic, which rose 60 percent this past year. Thirteen million shekels of improvements have already been made. The improvement program is scheduled to be completed in 2014.
