Forward Movement on Dead Sea Salt Harvesting

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz and Amir Elstein, head of the Israel Corporation, agreed, Thursday evening, to speed up contacts between the Treasury and the Dead Sea Works about harvesting chemical salts at the southern end of the Dead Sea and how to fund the work. The harvesting of the salts is seen as a solution to rising water levels that threaten the Dead Sea resorts.

Deputy Attorney General Avi Licht has issued an opinion that Dead Sea Works should bear the largest share of the 2.5-billion-shekel cost, according to a report this week by Globes, which said the rest of the funding should come from the state, regional authorities and the resorts.
